This family history is based on a variety of sources. Archival materials, books, newspapers and magazines, as well as private family papers.

I have gathered some specific sources in this part, in order to avoid repeatings but still making appropriate references.

Not all of them have been used in this family history, but they may help others while searching. The headlines are:

Basic W.I. family history

Basic West Indian family history, preferably relating to British West Indies, is found in the publications of:

Caribbeana, by Vere Langford Oliver

A quarterly journal published in London by the English genealogist V.L. Oliver from 1909 until 1919. See also further information about Oliver's books on page * in a following section.

There is a complete set, volumes I-VI, at British Library in London (pressmark 6237.AB), which is bound in six volumes. Each consisting of eight parts, including table of contents and index of names. Except for volume VI, which only consists of three parts and carries no index.

There is, however, a separate index to the last volume compiled by Henry R. Phipps and entiteled Index of names (1935), British Library pressmark "9915 W 8".

Caribbeana might be considered as rare. According to Calmeyer (CBG 1973:104), there is also a set at the Library of the Royal Academy of Science (Du; Bibliotheek Koninklijke Genootschap) in the Hague. This set, however, is probably not complete as Calmeyer only refers to volumes I-IV, printed 1909-1916.

I have made enquiries at Danish and Swedish Libraries, but without finding a copy. Therefore it was quite remarkable when meeting Dr Germain at British Library, who pointed to a microfilm copy in Guadeloupe. Finally, a subscribers list is included in each volume. This should lead to other copies, for example at:

¨ New York Historical Society, New York

¨ New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, M.A.

¨ South Carolina Historical Society, Charleston, S.C.

¨ Institute of Jamaica, Kingston, Jamaica

A transcript of "Table of Contents" is found in Appendix, part IV of this family history.

The Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society

This periodical is mainly devoted to the Barbadian area, and has been published since 1933. KMTRKMTR

I have made a referens to ADNEY REP. Why?

In 1983, The Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc. in Baltimore, published the Genealogies of Barbados Families (ISBN 0-8063-1004-9). The book is compiled by J.C. Brandow and contains excerptions and reprints selected from Caribbeana and The Journal of the Barbados Museum.

Some Caribbean families

The following brief survey of family names refer to books, articles and reports. My intention is only to give an alphabetical list refering to major works.

Benners See section "Reference list - SCOTT" and the Caribbean Network, section "BJ".

Bretton, von See Uytendal below

Codrington Christopher Codrington acted as Governor-General (1700-1705) of the British Leeward Islands. Family information are found in the biograhpical work Christopher Codrington 1668-1710 by V.T. Harlow (Oxford 1928).

Cuviljé See section "Some people behind - CALMEYER"

Ekerman Manuscript (dated December 1986) and dealing with the descendants of Gustaf Ekerman (1773-1840), who came from Sweden and settled on St Barth in 1785. The report was written by Robert D. Buckley & Jan Ekermann and entitled Ekerman - The American Branch. Compare Ekerman in reference section.

Heyliger See section "Some people behind - CALMEYER and HOFF"

Mussenden Computer print-out as per July 1995, by Richard de Mussenden Leathes. Compare Leathes in reference section.

Pinney Some genealogical information can be obtained from the book A West-India Fortune (Bristol 1950) by Richard Pares. The book is focusing on the Pinney family and their part in the West Indian sugar industry and trade.

During a time-span of almost two centuries, the Family is followed from their plantations mainly on Nevis to their Merchant-House in Bristol.

Romondt, van "The van Romondt Family Tree" is included as appendix no 1 in the book For the love of St Maarten (New York 1987) by Will Johnson.

Some people behind

Many have made great tributes to the knowledge of W.I. family history. Although a summary is bound to be inadequate, the following section is listing some references that are often repeted.

Calmeyer, M.R.H.

See SCOTT:9011/ancestry CBG 1973__, ADNEY REP:25

The following W.I. articles have been published by Calmeyer:

¨ "Het Geslacht Cuviljé", De Nederlandsche Leeuw 95 (1978), column 69-95.

¨ "Het Geslacht Heyliger", Jaarboek Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie 27 (The Hague 1973), page 97-180.

¨ "Het Geslacht Zymonsz Donker", Jaarboek Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie 37 (The Hague 1983), page 193-203. Together with Ariette Schippers.

Hamelberg, J.H.J.

Hamelberg served as secretary at the local Dutch administration in the West Indies. At the turn of the 19th century he worked on Statia, where his historical interest resulted in recopying of Statian records (CBG REG).

He also produced several works pertaining to the history and population of the Netherland Antilles. One book in particular is De Nederlanders op de West Indische Eilanden, printed in Amsterdam 1903. A complete list is given in the bibliography edited by STICUSA in 1985.

Biographical notes about Hamelberg have been written by M.D. Latour and W.R. Menkman. For further particulars, see STICUSA:1985, item no 5064 and 5077.

Parts of his manuscript collection (inventorized as no 120B) are at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in the Hague. This is further described by Krafft's at page 427 in his Historie en Oude Families van de Nederlandse Antillen. Among others is:

120B 4VI Copy of the proceeding trial of Lieut.-Colonel Cockburn for the loss of St Euststius in 1783.

Another part of his MS collection is found at the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie (CBG), in The Hague. See CBG 1973:102, ADNEY REP:25KMTR

ARA Algemeen Rijksarchief (ARA), Prins Willem-Alexanderhof 20, NL-2595 BE The Hague - Netherlands

Prime sources regarding the Dutch West Indies are mainly found in the archives of de West Indische Compagnie, in short WIC. The company got its first charter in 1621, and was reorganised in 1674.

The executive body was first called Heeren XIX, but was later changed into Heeren X after reorganisation of the WIC. According to Goslinga (1971:92), these nineteen (later ten) directors represented the five confederated Chambers of Amsterdam, Zeeland, Maas, the Northern Quarter (the West Frisian towns) and Town & Country (the provinces of Groningen and Friesland). Finally, the Staates General appointed one member.

General archives inventories

The reading-room at ARA contains several reference handbooks or manuscripts. In addition, some of the holdings have been microfilmed (35 mm format). Therefore the catalogue entitled Overzicht 35 rollfilms sectie 1 (print-out AdJ/18-07-95), should be consulted.

The following registers in manuscript form contain:

1 "Area profile population lists" indicates a set of lists covering the three islands. These lists were taken almost within the same span of time, thus giving a unique description of the total Dutch population in this area at distintive years!

2 Last lists according to Calmeyer (NL XCV:3/94).

3 Mentioned by Adney (Rep:23). However, Adney refers to two lists in ARA WIC 1196. The first is dated July 22nd, 1789, counting 8102 inhabitants (pp 553-629). Then a second list dated December 16th, 1789, counting 7830 inhabitants (pp 631-708).

Births, marriages and deaths

The archival body called Oud-archief Sint Eustatius tot 1828, abbreviated OASE, contains ecclesiastical records and civil registrations from the local administration. These are found in the Archief van der Burgerlichen Standen, which are further described in a printed register published by ARA (1994:24). Microfiche copies of this holding are available from CBG.

Additional information from the Anglican congregation contain Baptisms 1773-78, Marriages 1771-79 and Burials 1755-58, 1772-79 are also on microfiche from CBG. So far I have no information as to where these original records are kept. Perhaps they might be found in ARA, OASE #259 Gedeponeerde Stukken "Notulenboek van de Anglicaanse kerk op St Eustatius" (see ARA 1994:25)?

Finally, in 1973 Grode & Garret transcribed gravestone inscriptions on Statia. Their book, entitled Gravestone Inscriptions, St Eustatius N.A. 1686-1930 (USA 1976), was published in a very limited edition. However, Hoff (1982:119), says there is a MS at the New England Historic Genalogical Society Library in Boston.

Note

1 The register of "Ondertrouw en Trouw" (i.e. Banns and Marriages) 1710-1749 was transcribed by J.H.J. Hamelberg in 1891. It has been reprinted and published by Emmering in the series Antilleanse Reeks IV entitled "De Nederlanders op de West Indische Eilanden" (1985), with a first edition published in Amsterdam in 1903. Hamelberg's transcript is also available on microfiche from CBG.

The civil registration was a common procedure in the Dutch comunity. The following description is extracted from an article in the Dansk Vestindisk Regierings Avis (UBD DVRA:1833/9) in 1833, under the heding of "Life in Holland".

Quoting:

.... Marriages in Holland are merely civil obligations, which require no ecclesiastical sanction to give them validity. A week or two before the ____ notice is given to the burgomaster; the certificates of baptism, and the consent of the parents (when that consent is necessary) are deposited with the magistrate, and on the day fixed, the parties attend with their friends in the Town-hall, and the article of the code is read, which records the obligations of the marital condities. Then the burgomaster asks in a loud voice whether the parties consent to fulfil the matrimonial obligations, and on their answer "yes", or bowing the head in assent, he declares the marriage valid.

BANC Bancroft Library (BANC), University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 - USA

The Library has two manuscript collections of special interest for the West Indies. The first collection pertains to the Danish West Indies. This collection consists of manuscript from 1665-1900's as well as occasional newspapers. The collection is further described by Charles F. Reid (ed.) in Bibliography of the Virgin Islands of the United States (New York 1941) pp 102-103.

The second collection is entitled Documents Relating to the Dutch West Indies, 1685-1881 (BANC MSS Z-A 2). These documents are kept in two boxes. Box # 1 contains Curacao documents, folders 1-84, while box # 2 covers St Eustatius and St Martin, folders 85-175. The holdings are further described in a so called "Partial list of correspondents and documents", which is included in the first box. See further my correspondence from 1994 and 1995.

Records of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC)

Edwards 9408 refers to a Dutch Reformed Church on St John. Knox in his A Historical Account of St Thomas, W.I. (New York reprint 1970) does not mention St John at all (pages 137-146) with regard to D.R.C. On the other hand it just described the situation on St Thomas. Furthermore, he states that the records only existed from 1744 ("The new book") and onwards (page 137, 139).

Records from the congregation on St Croix, however, partly exist in the District Archives of Copenhagen (book no 774, microfilm M 1049B and M 1050A), covering: Births 1776-84, 1786-87, 1788-1814. Marriages 1764-73, 1775-83, 1787, 1788-1802, 1810, 1812, 1814. Finally members of the congregation for various years.

Paul Scott in Georgia sent me extracts regarding Benners families, which were said to come from "St Thomas Library - Microfilm; Dutch Reformed Church". The first Benners' note is from 1744 saying: "Members of in 1744 - Anna Maria Benner, wife of Pieter de Windt".

A note by HOFF (1983:35) says "The records of St Thomas Reformed Dutch Church were apparently destroyed. There is, however, an English translation Register of the Members of the Reformed Dutch Church in St Thomas, commencing in the year 1744 (MS, St Thomas Public Library)."

In 1980 I had a letter from Jack White, Minister of DRC in St Thomas, where it is evident that records exist from the early 19th century. In 1983 I asked the staff at DRC in St Thomas, but they had no idea about such records.

LUNDSTRÖM , Evert; Den gudomliga ön (Stockholm 1982).

A fictive story about a young man's life on St Barth from the early colonization by the Swedes to the 1830's. Although this novell does not fit into the frames of this section, it earns a place among important books. The author is very knowledgeable as to the Swedish period of the island's history. Besides, the book is an excellent example of facts turned into fiction.
